Peter Aerts

Belgian artist Peter Aerts explores the sculptural potential of clay through an intensely physical and intuitive process. His works echo the silent vitality of geological formations, drawing from years of observation of rocks, fossils and arid landscapes in Greece and West Africa. Aerts kneads, throws and moulds clay using his entire body, translating inner impulses into natural forms that appear both ancient and alive.

Central to his practice is a historic analogue gas kiln from the 1980s, which he uses to subject his stoneware pieces to high-risk firings, resulting in deep, elemental surfaces and singular glaze expressions. Each sculpture emerges as a unique artefact, shaped by physical force, geological memory and the transformative power of fire.
